Welcome to our part one series on how to use Social Media More Effectively! With so much information out there and especially with the ever-changing social media trends you hear and read about, we are sharing a three part series of blogs that will cover various topics related to Social Media, specifically the WHAT, the WHEN and the HOW. While they won’t solve all of the world’s problems, they will get you thinking about your Social Media strategy and offer some tips on how you can be using it more effectively.

As a Social Media Manager, your time is spent planning, implementing, managing and monitoring your company’s Social Media strategy to always be building brand awareness. What you do directly improves marketing efforts which hopefully translates to increasing sales. By consistently pushing out more content, your brand awareness increases, your sales increase and it all works magically together!

Yeah, yeah we know what our job is but there are so many factors beyond this. We have to plan out our content, measure post performance, figure out the best times to post, what hashtags and keywords to use, come up with something interesting to talk about and so much more. Plus, we have to engage, engage, engage…

Today’s article will focus on What to post. At RSC Marketing & Advertising, we try to plan out our full year of social media posts or at least get a good idea on topics we want to cover. We give ourselves the flexibility though to change things on the fly as new information comes up. A lot of thought is put into what to actually post and what people will read and actually think is newsworthy and interesting. We like to break it down into 5 different subjects to keep our content fresh and engaging.

Does this post do one of the following:

  • EDUCATE - Teach a lesson, show & tell, share a resource, or give additional information

  • ENTERTAIN - Share a story, tell them something funny or relatable

  • INSPIRE - Share a quote, give a pep-talk, feature another creator or business owner

  • INFORM - Show the behind the scenes of your business, or something they wouldn’t normally see

  • INTERACT - Ask a question, illicit feedback, sell or promote something, give them a call-to-action

With these in mind you’re probably asking for some ideas both on what to post and what not to post. Let’s start with what not to post.

Here is a list of a few ingredients that you should keep out of the kitchen:

  • Too Much Content

  • Overly Promotional Content

  • Profanity

  • Misleading Information

  • Political or Religious Content

  • Abusive Content

  • Confrontational Comments

  • Irrelevant Content

  • Adult Content

  • Negative or Derogatory Content

  • Brand-Inconsistent Content

On the other hand, here is a list of ingredients that will have your guests coming back for more!

  • Informational Articles

  • Infographics

  • Company or Team Member Highlights

  • Quick Tips

  • Videos

  • Fun Facts

  • Inspirational Quotes

  • Special Events

  • Throwback Thursday Posts #TBT

  • Testimonials and Case Studies

  • Offers, Contests or Giveaways

We hear you! It can be challenging to come up with new and exciting recipes (WHAT to post on Social Media), especially when you are trying to be creative with your content and consistently engage with your followers. The most important thing to keep in mind is to be consistent and to post engaging content. These two items alone will greatly contribute to the success for your social media presence.

Remember, posting engaging content on a regular basis is super important because it builds brand trust and awareness plus it gives you more ways to connect with your audience. You will stay top-of-mind and they will trust your brand more. So keep on posting! The more you post, the more chances you have to interact with your audience and beyond just your followers. It only takes one person to share your post and now you are introduced to an entirely new audience! How cool is that?!

We hope we have inspired you with some of our favorite things that we like to post on Social Media. Up next, be sure to check out our Part 2 of What’s in the Kitchen, WHEN you should post on Social Media.
